Spanish Masala and Meluha- reasons for twin joys

Dear Ones

I am sooooo touched by your warmth… a BIG thank you for accepting Spanish Masala!! … To share with you, I have another reason for happiness, `MELUHA’, a new house at Ernakulum. Meluha (as in `The Immortals of Meluha’) means ‘a near perfect land’! Its dwellers hope it turns as perfect as it can with all our imperfections!!

I arrived at Dubai on 23rd January. The work of my new film ‘Diamond necklace’ is set to begin soon. Will keep updating as we take off…

Now please pray for Spanish Masala and Meluha…

Belated New Year Wishes …

Well, better late than never. I wish all of you a peaceful and prosperous new year. I have been busy with my new film ‘Spanish Masala’. Besides, there were a few other things which kept me busy-like shooting of ‘Cinemakkaryangal ‘and celebrity interviews at One TV, where I am the creative head. All these things kept me offline for a short period; so I could not send replies to the New Year greetings. Now I am back, and belated New Year wishes to all…

For me, Christmas and New Year celebrations were rather calm with my family members. On January 1, I went to Bharathappuzha with my wife, children and my sister’s children. Now, long grass with white colored flowers has taken place the sands at Bharathappuzha. The grass seems like the ghost of the sand that was once there. After that day, I went back to my usual busy schedule. My new movie ‘Spanish Masala’ is all set to hit the screen on 19th of this month.

There was not a single film directed by me in 2011, and it is the second time in my directorial career which spans over 13 years. The years 2000 also did not see any movie by me. After ten years, another year, 2011, comes with a ‘barren’ face. Now, ‘Spanish Masala’ is ready to be served onscreen this January which is my next film after ‘Elsamma enna ankutty’ .

The year 2011 has been a significant one for Malayalam cinema in many ways. (Not because I did not register my presence with a film, lol). New concepts and new directors have forayed into the Malayalam cinema world with a bang. We have also seen the clash among various film associations and the subsequent strikes. Thus 2011 has been an eventful one. The first movie of 2012 has been released. Films like ‘Kunjaliyan’,’ Asuravith’, ‘Padmasree Bharat Dr Saroj Kumar and ‘Casanova’ are all set to entertain the viewers, along with my Spanish Masala.

Remember, now you can go to theatre and watch movies with kids because the exam fever has not yet begun. So, enjoy ‘Spanish Masala’…

Spanish Masala with a Kerala flavor

Beautiful Films

Hi Friends,

I saw the film `Beautiful’ directed by V.K.Prakash yesterday. I had seen `Swapna Sanchari’ a couple of days back. These two films reiterated my belief in Malayalam cinema. Those who have been singing praises of other language films should take note of these films that kindle our hope further in the art form!

Beautiful is as charming as its name. Swapna Sanchari is a film with a message.

Beautiful interests the viewer with novel story telling. There is no doubt that this film is the best so far from the director. Anoop Menon has positioned himself at an admirable status as script writer. And Jayasurya has selected the best role in his career through `Beautiful’! The performance of all main characters  by Jayasurya, Anoop,  Meghna and supporting roles by Tini Tom, Nandu and a host of other actors are commendable. For the way the story is told and the revelation of the plot through the characters, VKP and his young soldiers need to be given a big applause!! Hats off to you!

എറണാകുളത്തു നിന്ന്‌ തൃശ്ശൂര്‍ക്കുള്ള ട്രയിന്‍ യാത്ര; ലോക്കല്‍ കമ്പാര്‍ട്ട്മെണ്റ്റില്‍. ഞാന്‍ അസോസിയേറ്റ്‌ ഡയറക്ട്ടറായി ജോലി ചെയ്യുന്ന കാലം – ഇരിക്കാന്‍ സീറ്റുകിട്ടാതെ ബാത്ത്‌റൂമിണ്റ്റെ ദുര്‍ഗന്ധവും ശ്വസിച്ച്‌ ൨ ബാത്ത്‌റൂമുകള്‍ക്കിടയില്‍ ഞെരുങ്ങി നില്‍ക്കുന്നു. പെട്ടെന്ന്‌ പുറത്താരോ അടിച്ചു – നരച്ച താടിയും, മുഷിഞ്ഞ ജുബ്ബയും, കഷണ്ടിയുമായി മുല്ലനേഴി. “കമലിണ്റ്റെ അസിസ്റ്റണ്റ്റ്‌ അല്ലേ? ‘ ഈ പുഴയും കടന്നി’ണ്റ്റെ സെറ്റില്‍ നമ്മള്‍ കണ്ടിട്ടുണ്ട്‌. തൃശ്ശൂര്‍ക്കാണോ?” – “അല്ല, ഷൊര്‍ണ്ണൂര്‍ക്ക്‌. അവിടുന്ന്‌ ഒറ്റപ്പലം” പിന്നെ തൃശ്ശൂരെത്തുന്നതുവരെ – ദീര്‍ഘനാളായി പരിചയമുള്ളയാളോടെന്ന പോലെ വര്‍ത്തമാനം – സാഹിത്യം, സിനിമ, രാഷ്ട്രീയം എല്ലാമാ ചര്‍ച്ചയിലുണ്ട്‌.

പത്തുപന്ത്രണ്ട്‌ വര്‍ഷങ്ങള്‍ക്കു ശേഷം നീലത്താമരയുടെ കാസ്റ്റിംഗ്‌ കാലം; വലുതും ചെറുതുമായ കഥാപാത്രങ്ങള്‍ക്ക്‌ നടീനടന്‍മാരെ തിരഞ്ഞെടുക്കാന്‍ എം.ടി. സാറുമായി ചര്‍ച്ച – പ്രധാന കാസ്റ്റിംഗ്‌ കഴിഞ്ഞിരുന്നു – ആല്‍ത്തറയിലെ ആശാനെന്ന കഥാപാത്രം മാത്രം ഫൈനലൈസ്‌ ചെയ്തിരുന്നില്ല – നരച്ച താടിയുള്ള ഒരു മുഖമായിരുന്നു മനസ്സില്‍ – അറിയുന്ന താടിക്കാരായ പല നടന്‍മാരുടേയും പേരുകള്‍ ഞാന്‍ സജ്ജസ്റ്റ്‌ ചെയ്തു…… പതിവുപോലെ എല്ലാം നിശബ്ദനായി കേട്ടിരുന്നു. പിന്നെ മീശയിലൊന്നു പിടിച്ചു – സംസാരത്തിണ്റ്റെ ആദ്യലക്ഷണം – പതിയെ പറഞ്ഞു “മുല്ലനേഴി”. ഞാനും അത്ഭുതത്തോടെ പെട്ടെന്നോര്‍ത്തു. ഞാനെന്തേ ആ പേരോര്‍ത്തില്ല – ആ കഥാപാത്രത്തിനേക്കാള്‍ നല്ലൊരു കാസ്റ്റിംഗ്‌ ഇല്ല – അങ്ങനെ മുല്ലനേഴി നീലത്താമരയിലെ ആല്‍ത്തറയിലെ ആശാനായി. പിന്നീട്‌ സിനിമ റിലീസ്‌ ചെയ്തപ്പോഴും അതിനു ശേഷവും അദ്ദേഹത്തിണ്റ്റെ കോളുകള്‍ വന്നു. എണ്റ്റെ പുതിയ വിശേഷങ്ങളാരാഞ്ഞും, അദ്ദേഹത്തിണ്റ്റെ വിശേഷങ്ങളറിയിച്ചു കൊണ്ടും – അവസാനത്തെ കോള്‍ വരുമ്പോള്‍ ഞാനെണ്റ്റെ വര്‍ഷാവസാന കണക്കുനോട്ടത്തിണ്റ്റെ തിരക്കിലായിരുന്നു. എനിക്ക്‌ സംസാരിക്കാനപ്പോള്‍ സമയമില്ലായിരുന്നു. “തിരിച്ചു വിളിക്കാം മാഷേ” എന്നു പറഞ്ഞ്‌ എന്തിനാണ്‌ വിളിച്ചതെന്നന്വേഷിക്കാതെ ഞാന്‍ ഫോണ്‍ വച്ചു.

അന്നു വൈകീട്ട്‌ അവിചാരിതമായി ചെന്നൈക്കു പോകേണ്ടി വന്നു – നാലഞ്ചു ദിവസത്തിനു ശേഷം നെടുമ്പാശ്ശേരിയിലെത്തി ലഗേജിന്‌ വെയ്റ്റ്‌ ചെയ്യുമ്പോള്‍ റിപ്പോര്‍ട്ടര്‍ ടി.വി യില്‍ നിന്നൊരു ഫോണ്‍. “മുല്ലനേഴി മാഷെ അനുസ്മരിക്കുമോ?” “അനുസ്മരിക്യേ എന്തിന്‌? എന്താ പരിപാടി?” ഞാന്‍ ചോദിച്ചു. ഉള്ളിലുയര്‍ന്നു വന്ന ഒരു അപകടസൂചന അമര്‍ത്തി വച്ചുകൊണ്ട്‌ വീണ്ടും ചോദിച്ചു “അനുസ്മരണമോ? എന്തിന്‌?” – കേള്‍ക്കരുതെന്നാഗ്രഹിച്ച ഉത്തരം വന്നു,” ഇന്നു പുലര്‍ച്ച – മുല്ലനേഴി അന്തരിച്ചു. ” വിശേഷങ്ങളന്വേഷിക്കുന്ന ആ ഫോണ്‍ വിളി ഇനിയുണ്ടാവില്ല; അവസാനം വിളിച്ചതെന്തിനായിരുന്നു എന്നിനി ഒരിക്കലും ഞാനറിയില്ല!
