Puramkazhchakal (outer sights)

Apologies for the gap in writing…

Neelathamara is shot. Its first cut, primary edit, is done. Now we are dubbing at Ernakulam. Meanwhile a new project, a small `big’ movie, was in making! The reason why I couldn’t blog is the same… this film   `Puramkazhakal’ was being shot, edited and completed during the last couple of weeks.

You might have heard about the new film venture `Kerala Café’ being produced by director Ranjith’s Capitol theatre. Ten film makers in Kerala, nine well known and a debutant, are joining hands to do ten short films, to be connected together to hit screens as a single full length feature.. I am doing a ten minute film based on an acclaimed short story of the gifted writer C.V Sreeraman. Here is sharing another joy that I have prepared screen play and dialogue for the same!

Puramkazhchakal 001

Mammootty, Sreenivasan, Manikandhan, D.C.Nair, Ronichan and Sreelekha play lead roles in `Puramkazhchakal’. I had procured the right for the story long back from Sreeramettan. Until his demise he kept asking me about the future of the project! It was planned to be a television movie for Amritha TV. Fortunately or otherwise it did not take off. At the shock of his farewell this story reminded me of a shadow of guilt. When Renjith narrated the concept of Kerala Café that it has the theme as travel, Puramkazhchakal and Sreeramettan came in once again! It is a privilege to do this story in celluloid. It was the writer’s wish to make the story in film medium. It might well be his blessing that the narrative is taking shape through great performances of Mammookka and Sreeniettan!

The cinematographer of Neelathamara, Vijay Ulaganath is wielding camera for this film. Ranjan Abraham is the editor. Back ground score is done by Bijibal, Sreejith Guruvayoor does Make up and costumes are by Sajith Edappal. I share the `Kerala Café’ platform with Shaji Kailas, Shyamaprasad, B.Unnikrishnan, Anvar Rasheed, Revathi, Anjali Menon, Padma Kumar, Uday Ananthan and Ranjith’s associate and first time director Shankar.

It’s a film about journey; telling us there are more for our eyes, ears and body to experience at every turn of life. And surely it is New!

  1. Waiting for this Kerala Cafe to release. Malayalam needs good experimentation like this. C V Sreeraman always had the stories for the Celluloid. Vasthuhara and Chidambaram were real gems.

Mammooty and Sreenivasan looks great in the scenes. Sreenivasan’s makeup and body language is typical of an old man.

  2. Lalji,
As ur a person who loves a lot to travel and see outside world,i really feel a great hope in this small big movie “Puramkazhchakal”.And i beleive these kind of small movies to tell things in a shorter time frame is a kind of challenge for directors like u.
We always waiting for great challenges like this from u again & again
    All the best
    Ravi Jose
    Note: Blogging needs continuity…….

  3. Hi Lalu,

This certainly is interesting! When I read about 10 directors with different concepts, it reminded me of Dus Kahaniyan which was a Sanjay Gupta stable release I think. Though it had couple of good stories, I still feel that 10 disjointed stories cannot bring satisfaction to a movie goer. Its akin to asking a book lover to be satisfied reading 1 edition of a Mangalam magazine! I hope that this endevour of yours will certainly have a common thread that will merge in the climax something that Quentin Tarantino so expertly does in most of his movie..

Best wishes to all involved in the movie.. the stills look outstanding!

  4. hi,
Its a great pleasure to know about this new project and i am sure these ten wonderfull directors will make wonders and its a great gift for malayalam filim, and we all are waiting to see your magic tuch in malayalam movie, such a dedicated person like you can make any thing wonderfull.
All the best from our family and may god bless you.

  5. sir, thenews is very good and we are expecting another magic rom Laljose’s script&direction. But as a cinelover i like to see you as a director rather than script writer.I have also a request that please explain why you are prepairing this script yourself

  6. Talk about co-incidences!! I am reading a book called Synchro Destiny which talks all about how life is made of co-incidences. Just today a friend and I were discussing your movies and there you go – I stumble upon your website. Absolutely thrilled to go through your blogs!! I have always wanted to write a congratulatory note after watching Chandupottu, but was not sure how to contact you.

Although I am a Tamilian, I grew up in Kerala and am a big fan of everything Malayalam – songs, movies and books!!! I think you have started a new trend in Malayalam movies and we look forward to more wonderful movies from you!!

Would like to send you a story – is there any way to contact you professionally?

    – Darshana.

  7. Nice to know about this project. It is interesting to see the performance from leading actors again in one bundle. Kudos to renjith, laljose, mamootty, dileep etc. Mammotty and sreenivasan looks amazing which boosts the expectation. Also, sad to see this masters only in short scenes…still all the best for the venture.

  10. എന്റെ ആദ്യ കമന്റ് ഇപ്പോഴും “Your comment is awaiting moderation.”

  11. what a funtastic seriuos treatment ‘kerala cafe’
puram kazhchakal, bidges…. also highly feeling movie. thank U Laljos, pls do like this short film again an again…

  12. i just loved puramkazhchakal….

when the peice began, it felt like just the nostalgia of sreeni chetan’s character… but i never xpected that kind of twist… i was simply spell bound….

  13. “Kerala cafe was a different experince, I really enjoyed the short films..
especially.. “Island Express”,”Bridge”,”Happy Journey” and “Puram kazhchakal”… In the short span of time our artists did a great job..
I didnt expect the twist in the end of “Puram kazhchakal”..

  14. Thank you for Puramkazhchakal. Still unsettled by the rush of thoughts and emotions because of Kerala Cafe. Happy to find your blog to convey this message. Wasn’t lucky enough to find rest of the crew blogging. But well wishes to all the creative minds. Keep going.

  15. Very happy to see you maturing further as a director with your associations with M.T and late C.V.Sreeraman. (Ofcourse classmates and arabikkatha were movies were you had already proved yourself once again after meesha maadhavan and chandranudikkunna dikkil.)

C.V Sreeraman is my favorite author and next to him is M.T. I am thrilled to see that you are going for making your movies with them, like noted directors Aravindan and Hariharan.

Eagerly waiting for the release of Neelathaamara.
And, missed to say one important thing. “Puramkaazhchakal” was very touching.
