Chakki is the first genuine `star’ in the sets of Neelathaamara. Without undergoing any training in performance, she won the hearts of all onlookers and they clapped spontaneously! After meeting her I was wondering if our concepts about doing home work for any kind of acting are to be revised! No reading and viewing… No lengthy mental preparations and not even any observation! She came, she did as she understood and she won! I have begun thinking that may be certain things in life are done better without preparations…!
This seventy three year old woman hailing from a typical dalit background in remote Palakkad still earns her living by manual labour. She is childless; but as far as we see her she has a candid and warm heart. Innate to any good mother she adjusts with situations and fellow beings in no time! We had to cut open her black plastic bangles for the sake of a scene, and she exclaimed with the natural mischievous glint in her eye, “Don’t forget to buy them when you send me back!” Chakkiyamma lost her life partner about twenty three years back, yet she goes on in life with remarkable positive energy. She was called but sent back without a shot one day, due to heavy rain. This was after she waited from morning till night fall. We felt uncomfortable to pacify her after we wasted her day. But all of us were in for surprise when she exclaimed pleasantly that she didn’t mind the inconvenience. The crew of Neelathamara savors these instances as bonus points…Such relationships make our life livable… Hope I can introduce more such lives who make our living worthwhile during this shoot.
